English tutoring

English tutoring in Brampton, from reading basics to university essays

Newton's is an English tutor in Brampton that builds writers from the ground up. Reading, writing, grammar, essays, and the kind of clear thinking that holds up in an AI-native world. Small-group sessions (max 4-5 students) with 1-on-1 also available.

What Newton’s English tutoring covers

English at Newton’s is a long arc, from early letters and sounds in junior kindergarten to writing university-level essays in Grade 12. We cover the parts most parents ask about: reading comprehension, writing, grammar, essay structure, and the formal exams along the way.

Coverage includes:

  • Reading comprehension and vocabulary (every grade)
  • Writing fundamentals: sentences, paragraphs, organization
  • Essay structure: thesis, evidence, transitions, revision
  • Literary analysis and close reading
  • Creative writing
  • Grammar and conventions
  • OSSLT preparation (Grade 10 literacy test)
  • ENG4U and university-bound writing
  • University application essays and personal statements

For early reading and phonics specifically, see our reading tutoring for JK to Grade 8.

Reading and comprehension support

Strong writers are first strong readers. For JK to Grade 8, we focus on comprehension at the right level: identifying main ideas, drawing inference, and growing vocabulary in context. Sessions stay book-led and tutor-led, because younger readers need a person, not a program. Most sessions are small groups, capped at 4 to 5 students, with each student following their own learning plan; 1-on-1 is also available when families prefer it.

For older students, we move into close reading of literature, non-fiction analysis, and the kind of evidence-finding that essay writing demands.

Writing and essay structure

Writing is thinking on the page. We teach the structure first: a clear thesis, paragraphs that each do one job, evidence that earns its place, and transitions that show the reader where you are going. We rebuild the habit of revising, not just spell-checking.

Sessions are hands-on. Students draft, the tutor reads it back to them, and they revise together. By the end, your child can plan a five-paragraph essay before they write a single sentence.

OSSLT preparation

The Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test is a Grade 10 graduation requirement. We prep students with timed reading passages, short and long writing tasks in the OSSLT format, and the test-taking strategy that turns a stressful morning into a manageable one. Most students benefit from four to eight focused sessions before the test window. See our OSSLT and standardized test prep for the full prep options.

University application essays and admissions writing

Grade 12 writing carries weight. Personal statements, OUAC supplementary essays, and Common App essays for US-bound students all share one truth: they have to sound like the student. We coach voice, structure, and revision. We do not write the essay. For full university support, see our university application essays page.

How we teach English: writing alongside AI, not against it

This is where the AI conversation gets loudest. Parents worry their kids will stop learning to write because ChatGPT does it for them. We hear that worry and answer it directly.

At Newton’s, writing is taught as thinking. AI shows up as a drafting partner and a revision coach, not a ghostwriter. Your child learns to brainstorm with AI, then critique what it produced, then rewrite it in their own voice. That is now a real literacy skill, and most kids are picking it up wrong on their own.

For the high-stakes work, OSSLT and university essays, hand-written drafting still anchors the session. Those have to be the student’s own voice, every word.
