How to help your child with math at home

You sit down to help with math homework, and within five minutes you are both frustrated. The method looks different than the one you learned. You can solve the problem, but you cannot explain it the way the teacher wants.

You are not alone, and you do not have to be a math person to help. This post gives you concrete strategies by grade band, plus a few habits that work across every age.

Why this matters

Math is the subject parents worry about most, because it stacks. A shaky Grade 4 fractions unit shows up again in Grade 7 algebra, then again in Grade 10. Each layer gets harder to patch.

The good news: math at home does not need to look like school. Short, low-stakes practice woven into normal life often beats a 30-minute homework session at the kitchen table. Your job is not to teach the curriculum. Your job is to make math feel doable.

Habits that work at every grade

Three habits do most of the heavy lifting, regardless of age.

  • Talk through your own math out loud (the tip at a restaurant, the time math at pickup, the price per kilo at the grocery store)
  • Praise the effort and the strategy, not the speed (kids who get told they are “fast” stop trying when problems get hard)
  • Normalize getting stuck (saying “I don’t know yet” out loud changes how your child reacts to the same feeling)

If you do nothing else, do these three. They cost nothing and they shape how your child thinks about hard problems for years.

JK to Grade 3: build number sense

At this age, math is a feeling before it is a subject. You are building a sense of how numbers work and how they relate to each other.

Try these:

  • Count anything in groups of two, five, or 10 (stairs, blocks, snacks)
  • Play simple board games with dice (Snakes and Ladders is a math curriculum in disguise)
  • Cook together and read fractions on measuring cups
  • Ask “how many more do we need?” instead of giving the answer

If your child can confidently count forwards and backwards by ones, twos, fives, and 10s by the end of Grade 2, the rest of elementary math gets easier.

Grade 4 to 6: the fractions and multiplication years

This is where parents often feel the curriculum shift. Multiplication facts, long division, and fractions all live here, and they all matter.

What helps:

  • Drill multiplication facts in five-minute bursts, not 30-minute sessions (use car rides or breakfast)
  • Use real fractions: pizza slices, a measuring cup, a cut sandwich
  • When your child gets stuck, ask “can you draw it?” before giving a hint
  • Review last year’s concepts every couple of weeks, not just this week’s homework

If you only target one thing in this band, target multiplication facts to automaticity. A child who has to think hard about 7 times 8 will struggle in every later math class.

Grade 7 to 8: the algebra ramp

This is the year math goes from concrete to abstract. Letters appear in equations. Negative numbers stop being a curiosity and start being a tool.

What works at home:

  • Make algebra physical: use coins, blocks, or sticky notes to represent unknowns
  • Do not skip the “why” (knowing why a negative times a negative is positive matters more than memorizing the rule)
  • Encourage your child to write out steps, even when they think they can do it in their head
  • Review order of operations weekly until it is automatic

If your child loses confidence here, it shows up sharply in Grade 9 and 10. A few weeks of focused support in middle school often saves a year of catch-up later.

Grade 9 to 12: course-aligned practice

High school math is graded, scheduled, and unit-locked. The home strategy has to change.

What helps:

  • Study by topic, not by chapter (use textbook section headings as a checklist)
  • Redo every test mistake within 48 hours, on a fresh page, without looking
  • Use spaced review: 10 minutes of last unit’s problems before each new homework session
  • For functions and trigonometry, draw the picture every time, even when you think you do not need to

The “I am not a math person” workaround

If you genuinely cannot explain a method, do not fake it. Try this instead.

  • Say “I learned it differently. Show me how the teacher did it.”
  • Watch a Khan Academy or Mathigon video together for the specific topic
  • Ask your child to be the teacher (explaining out loud is one of the best ways to learn)

You do not have to know the method. You have to be willing to sit next to your child while they figure it out.

When to call in support

If math homework is the trigger for daily stress, or if your child has stopped trying because the gap feels too big, that is the time to bring in a tutor. Math gaps do not heal themselves. They widen.
